Our Story
Beginning in 1925 as Beaumont’s "Little Theatre," Beaumont Community Players began as a humble troupe rehearsing in spaces around the city. In 1930, the group built the Little Theater in what was Beaumont's Fair Park. From the beginning, the Little Theater had a large and enthusiastic following. A full season of plays was performed each year until the late 1930's.
The stage was darkened during World War II, but after the war ended, dedicated players revived the Little Theater and changed the name to Beaumont Community Players in 1954. They continued to flourish and, in June 1986, larger musicals began to be produced at the Jefferson Theater downtown, while smaller shows were performed at the former Tyrrell Park Elementary School, which in 1995 was dubbed the Beaumont Community Players Playhouse. In June of 2006, the theatre purchased the former UA Phelan 6 theater in Beaumont's west end. After extensive renovations by volunteer labor, they moved to in to the building, and renamed it The Betty Greenberg Center for Performing Arts.
The theatre has collaborated throughout the years with organizations such as the Symphony of Southeast Texas, The Beaumont Civic Ballet, and Lamar University, among many others. It has grown to produce 8 shows per season, including 4 musicals, and 4 children's camps per summer. The organization is dedicated itself to be a place for community members to celebrate, participate in, and support theater and the arts in Southeast Texas. In 2024, the organization rebranded to Southeast Texas Stages (SETS or Stages) to reflect it's broadening reach into the community and be more inclusive of all the people and towns around 4155 Laurel St.
